Robyn King, director of the CV group, will parade in 2022 Rose Parade

Robyn King, group director for local schools at the Conotton Valley Union, will join other group directors from across the country on January 1 for the annual Pasadena de Roses Rose Parade tournament.

King applied and was accepted to join the “Saluting America’s Band Directors” project. A custom-designed animated float will lead the 300 members of the “Marching Band Directors’ Band”. The Michael D. Sewell Memorial Foundation, based in Pickerington, Ohio, is the sponsoring organization behind the project. It was created to recognize and continue the work of the late Mike Sewell, who dedicated his life to school and community music programs in Pickerington and the central Ohio area for over 38 years.

The entrance to the parade will carry the theme “We teach music. We teach life. The dedication and extraordinary accomplishments of Band Directors are well known to their students, parents, teachers and administrators. No matter where they teach and work, dedicated music teachers and leaders work long hours not only to teach and lead music, but to teach life itself. The experience acquired by conductors through this project will be an asset to their students in many ways.

Using new techniques to reach their students, new ideas for teaching music, and new resources available to keep their teaching fresh and relevant are just a few of the skills our participants will gain from this experience. They will interact with 300 other group directors from major programs across the country to share how “they do it”, and bring this information and techniques back to their home schools.

King is in her third year at Conotton Valley teaching general music grades 1-5, harmony 5-12 and marching band. She is also a bowling coach for the Rockets. King graduated from Akron University in 2018 with her Bachelor of Music in Music Education and from Walsh University in 2020 with her Master of Arts in Education. She will perform on the clarinet as part of the Rose Parade 2022 and is proud to represent Conotton Valley on this national platform.

Full details of the project are available on the Saluting America’s Band Directors website, BandDirectorSalute.org.
