Leicester’s Curve Theater has announced that it will stage the first new UK production of the musical Billy Elliot.
The Made at Curve production will be directed by Theater Artistic Director Nikolai Foster and will take place exclusively at Curve for just six weeks, from July 7 to August 14, 2022.
Set in the midst of the increasingly bitter miners’ strike of 1984/85, Billy Elliot the Musical is a story of determination, acceptance and daring to be different.

In a tight-knit community where family and tradition mean everything, can Billy forge a new destiny and follow his passion?
Based on the 2000 BAFTA-winning Stephen Daldry film starring Jamie Bell and Julie Walters, Billy Elliot the Musical features music by Elton John and a book and lyrics by Lee Hall.
Songs include Solidarity, The Letter, He Could Be a Star and Electricity.
The musical premiered at the Victoria Palace Theater in London in 2005 and won several international awards, including four Laurence Olivier Awards and 10 Tony Awards.
The musical will be choreographed by Lucy Hind (Girl From the North County, The Last Ship) and the full cast has yet to be announced.
The set and costumes will be designed by Colin Richmond, with lighting by Ben Cracknell, partner of Curve.
Speaking about this new Made at Curve production, Curve Managing Director Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster said:
“We are delighted to share Lee Hall and Elton John’s astonishing Billy Elliot musical with audiences at Curve, ensuring the summer of 2022 in Leicester is truly a memorable one.
“Billy Elliot is a musical filled with incredible characters, epic ideas and at its heart, the story of a young boy who has the passion and the courage to dance on a different path than the one prescribed for him. We are indebted to the incredible creators who made Billy such a success and we are extremely grateful for trusting us to create the first all new UK production for our audiences in Leicester.
“Working with a formidable production team and an incredible cast of the most exciting young performers, we are proud to present this powerful musical that recognizes the value of culture in our society, the importance of expressing your true self and gives voice to the courageous working-class communities that are portrayed in Lee Hall’s astonishing play, all beautifully framed by Elton John’s electrifying score.
