Southern Texans have the chance to take a spin on the ice this holiday season.
The Portland Parks and Recreation Dept. brought a real ice rink to the Portland Community Center under the Joe Burke Pavilion as part of their Christmas 2021 celebration on the coast. In 2019 they offered a synthetic ice rink but this year they brought an ice rink with real ice to give the locals a chance to practice their double axes, or fall on the back as the case may be. The rink is open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily until Sunday, January 2 (closed Tuesday, December 14 and Wednesday, December 15 for maintenance) and the $ 10 fee includes skate rental.
Other weekend activities include live music December 17-19 from The East & The Crow, Riptide Band, and Corpus Christi Symphony, as well as rides on a 60-foot Ferris wheel. Check their website for the full list of events and times.

The American Bank Center has brought the ever popular Coastal Christmas ice skating event back to the arena for a limited time. From Sunday, December 19 to Friday, December 24, people are invited to skate in 45-minute increments from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. New this year is a special sensory skating session on Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
When skaters are tired, there will be opportunities to snap photos of Santa Claus and fireplaces with s’mores, as well as DJ skate nights. Coastal Christmas is very popular, so advance ticket purchases are encouraged. The cost is $ 12 per person and includes skate rental, or $ 8 if you bring your own skates. Spectators are allowed and do not have to pay entry if they are not skating.
