Expanded ‘En Español’ World Tour Brings Mavericks to Des Moines

The Mavericks have always been a band with more than one accent.

The main one was country, as they recorded hits with bluesy and twangy tunes like “There Goes My Heart” and “All You Ever Do is Bring Me Down”. But it is also a group born in Miami with a Cuban-American singer and songwriter, Raúl Malo, a Mexican-American guitarist, Eddie Perez, and a penchant for Latin rhythms.

Now the group, founded in 1989, are touring behind their first Spanish-language album, “En Español”, and have expanded their schedule to include a Des Moines date early next year at Hoyt Sherman Place.

Tickets for the show on February 18 at 7:30 p.m. range from $ 50 to $ 70 and are available at hoytsherman.org.

The Mavericks came to Hoyt Sherman in October 2019 as part of a 30th anniversary tour. Anchored the following spring by the COVID-19 pandemic, they assembled and recorded “En Español” in a matter of months.

The Mavericks are a multilingual group known for fusing country and Latin music.

The album debuted at No.1 on Billboard’s Latin Pop charts in September 2020.

Malo told numerous interviewers that the album, which features several genres of Latin music, was not meant to be a political statement in a polarized era, but an expression of the group’s multifaceted talent and eclectic tastes.

“That kind of underlines this record, that kind of attitude of, ‘Hey, we’re an American band that started out in country music in the 90s, and look what we did. ” he told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Look where this journey has taken us. It’s a beautiful trip. “
