Brass Band of Columbus polishes performance in new LHHS music hall

On Tuesday evenings, a musical group composed mostly of adult musicians from central Ohio meet in the Licking Heights High School group room to practice together.

The Brass Band of Columbus (BBC) is now using the high school’s new music education space.

Previously, the group rehearsed at Dublin Jerome High School, where BBC principal Brian Stevens was an instructor before his retirement.

Licking Heights Group Director Megan Beavers joined the BBC in 2014, around the same time she accepted her position with local Licking Heights Schools.

When the group needed a new rehearsal space after Stevens’ retirement from the Dublin City School District, Beavers offered to use the new music room at Licking Heights High School.

“Meg said, ‘We have this wonderful new facility, if you want to come east,’” Stevens recalls. “The installation is top notch. It is beautiful. It has worked really well so far.”

Beavers noted that a Brass Band practice session in October straddled a recent evening wind ensemble concert in the new high school auditorium, directly across from the orchestra hall.

Licking Heights group director Megan Beavers trains with the BBC during a recent rehearsal at Licking Heights High School.

“They were able to rehearse in our orchestra hall around the same time we had a concert, and you couldn’t hear them, which is pretty remarkable,” Beavers said.

Stevens said the BBC currently has around 45 active members spread across Franklin, Licking and other surrounding counties.

The band members are an “eclectic” collection of people, including retired and active music teachers, college professors, retired dentists, medical doctors and professional musicians, among others.

“It’s a real community group that leans on the professional side,” Stevens said. “We have won the North American Championship 10 times. It’s just a great group of people who love to perform and give concerts.

“We’ve been around since 1984,” Stevens said. “It’s modeled after the British brass bands. This band was largely responsible for the entire brass band movement in North America.”

The BBC was recently selected to perform at Pearl Harbor to mark the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Beavers accompanied the BBC to Hawaii in December to perform.
