Shortly after sending last week’s edition of Festival Pass with an interview with Kings of Leon to Ohana, we learned that the group had canceled her performance due to a family medical emergency.
Festival curator Eddie Vedder stepped in to headliner a second night (after previously headlining solo on Saturday and with Pearl Jam on Sunday) and shared the sad news of the mother’s passing of the Followill brothers of the Kings of Leon.
It all happened after a the storm forced the fans to evacuate the hall for a moment. Journalist Kelli Skye Fadroski was there for it, and the the music that comes after.
I visited Ohana on Sunday and was blown away by a series of performances by Yola, Brandi Carlile, Jade Bird Mon Laferte and Sharon Van Etten. Oh yeah, and Pearl Jam played too. I wrote about it all.
It was my first time in Ohana and I was impressed. The setup was easy to navigate at Doheny State Beach and they were checking vax charts / test results and doing onsite testing.
Pearl Jam is back this weekend for the Ohana Encore, which is a slightly scaled-down version of the festival. And I’m hoping that since Carlile is back on Saturday, she’ll bring out Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Matt Cameron for another collaboration – last weekend included a fantastic rendition of Soundgarden’s âSearching With My Good Eye Closedâ. Better yet, Pearl Jam brought Carlile out for “Better Man” and more people NEED to hear his voice interacting with Vedder.
Pro tip: If you’re going to Ohana Encore, it’s worth taking the shuttle pass to the parking lot. Allow approximately 45 minutes to get from the parking lot to the gate. (The return trip was about half the time.)
In other festival news, this weekend we have the Hermosa Harmony Festival in Hermosa Beach, Afterburner in Huntington Beach and more. Read on.
